This veteran poker player, infamous for his altercation with Mike Matusow during the 2005 WSOP Main Event, was sentenced to 48 months in prison in November 2023 for operating an illegal marijuana business. He voluntarily entered into custody on January 1, 2024, with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.<\/span><\/p>
Podcast host and poker player Jeff Nadu first reported on the X platform that Sheikhan was leaving the halfway house.<\/span><\/p>
Sheikhan (often referred to as "Sheiky" in the poker world) was released early after serving just over half of his sentence and was sent to a residence in Phoenix, Arizona, to rejoin the administration. His sentence will end there in about a week, although the second part of his sentence requires him to undergo three years of supervised release.<\/span><\/p>

According to The Hendon Mob, Sheikhan had over $1.5 million in live poker tournament winnings. Upon his release, he must abide by numerous regulations to avoid re-imprisonment. One of these conditions is the prohibition of illegal possession of controlled substances.<\/span><\/p>
This poker player, who boasts six WSOP final table appearances and 14 winning streaks, initially faced a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. He later pleaded guilty in 2022 to a felony charge of conspiracy to distribute marijuana.<\/span><\/p>
According to his own confession, from an unknown date until February 24, 2022, the Iranian-born poker player, with an accomplice, knowingly and intentionally conspired to distribute 100 kilograms or more of mixtures and substances containing detectable amounts of cannabis, in violation of Title 21, Sections 841(c) and 846 of the United States Code.<\/span><\/p>
From at least 2019 until early 2022, Sheikhan and others operated a lucrative, unlicensed illicit cannabis business they called "Cannaland." The primary purpose of the business was to wholesale cannabis and cannabis products to illicit cannabis dispensaries, mainly located in San Diego County.<\/span><\/p>
On April 7, 2021, authorities executed a search warrant on a 3,400-square-foot business premises that Sheikhan helped operate in Springvale, California (a small town near San Diego). During the search, more than 3,000 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of approximately $6 million, were seized. Five firearms were also confiscated.<\/span><\/p>
In addition to a four-year prison sentence, Sheikhan voluntarily surrendered nearly $300,000 in cash, most of which consisted of casino chips from various poker rooms.<\/span><\/p>
If Sheikhan decides to compete in the 2026 World Series of Poker, he will be looking for his first WSOP cash at Horseshoe and the Paris Las Vegas Hotel. His most recent winning streak was a ninth-place finish in the 2021 Rio $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Low Card Draw Championship, earning him $32,162. This was the last year before the WSOP moved to the Las Vegas Strip.<\/span><\/p>
