Daniel Negreanu details the craziest tournament scam he's ever seen. In a YouTube video, Daniel Negreanu exposes an old-fashioned tournament scam from the 1990s Bicycle Club, where players defraud others by overselling and exchanging shares, an act that borders on antisocial.

It's fair to say that Daniel Negreanu knows everything about the world of poker—including the darker side of this industry we all love.

Fortunately, blatant poker scams are much less common nowadays, thanks in large part to stricter security measures and cautionary tales that have exposed these sordid frauds over the years.

Nevertheless, a story shared by Negreanu in his latest YouTube video exposes an extremely ruthless old-fashioned tournament scam, which KidPoker himself describes as almost "antisocial."

Fraud methods

On his YouTube channel (which has nearly a million followers), Negreanu tells viewers a story about his time playing cards in the Bicycle Club in the 1990s, using a tournament with $1,000 buy-in as an example to illustrate this scam.

He described how one player would aggressively sell shares before the tournament even started: "I'd walk up to the casino, and this guy would say, 'Hey boss, wanna buy 5%? Wanna buy 10%?'"

Negreanu explained that the key was that this player always oversold himself, accepting backing more than he actually owned. "He would sell at face value (or a slight premium) for value." 2,500 shares... so now he bought the tournament, he has...He had 1,000, plus 1,500 TP4T, but he oversold it. So if he makes the money in this tournament, he's doomed; he'll lose money.

"If he makes it into the money in this tournament, he's done for; he'll lose money."

From that point on, as the tournament progressed and chips began to accumulate, the scam took shape. "Well, he wasn't going to cash in this tournament. What he did was play well; he tried to accumulate chips. So now he has..." He made a profit of 1,500, and then at the poker table he said, "Hey boss, want to exchange 5?"1,500.

While Negreanu admitted he found the scam audacious and even somewhat amusing, he made it clear that it was wrong, even bordering on "antisocial." He said, "He went home drinking, drinking some snake wine or whatever he was drinking at the time... Now, I find it kind of funny, but it's completely wrong. I think it's crazy for people to do that. I could never do that; you have to be antisocial. It's a scam, it's a fraud, it's a very dishonest person."
