Former U.S. Representative Barney Frank has passed away at the age of 86. He was a leading advocate for the legalization of online poker, the repeal of UIGEA, and a pioneer of LGBTQ+ rights, as well as a co-author of the Dodd-Frank Act.
Barney Frank, a former congressman who tirelessly advocated for the legalization and regulation of online poker in the United States, passed away peacefully at his home in Oganquett, Maine, on Tuesday evening at the age of 86.
This veteran Democratic U.S. Representative is best known for his pioneering role in LGBT rights and for co-authoring the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (in response to the financial crisis of the late 2000s). He served in Congress for over three decades, retiring in 2013. He is also a champion of legal online poker and works to repeal the Unlawful Online Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
defenders of legal online poker
Frank expressed his support for online gambling to the media at the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP). Although he was no longer in office when Delaware, Nevada, and New Jersey first launched legal online poker sites in 2013, his efforts during his time in Congress were undoubtedly invaluable.
This Democratic legislator from Massachusetts introduced legislation in 2007 to ban UIGEA, a 2006 law that previously made operating online poker websites illegal in the United States. He subsequently introduced HR 2267, the Online Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, arguing that poker is a skill-based game.
Frank was a staunch supporter of the once-famous Poker Players Association (PPA), who believed that legalizing online poker could bring billions of dollars in tax revenue to the federal government. During his final term, after the "Black Friday" scandal devastated the online poker industry in the United States, he returned campaign donations from executives at Full Tilt Poker.
Frank's advocacy for poker did not translate into legal online poker during his presidency, and the poker community has yet to fully recover from the shadow of Black Friday. However, his efforts did pave the way for states to issue their own licenses and regulate online poker sites.
In addition to supporting the poker community, Frank, as one of the first openly gay members of Congress, is also an advocate and pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights.
The late congressman was born on March 31, 1940, in Bayon, New Jersey. He first won a congressional election in 1980, defeating Republican candidate Richard A. Jones. He then won 12 consecutive elections until 2012 when he decided not to run for re-election.
Frank held several positions in the House of Representatives, including chairman of the House Financial Services Committee (2007-2011). He had been receiving palliative care at his home in Maine for the past few months and ultimately died of congestive heart failure.
