WSOP Europe: A Comprehensive Review of Main Event Data Over the Past Two Decades
The 2026 WSOP European Main Event set multiple historical records, with the total prize pool exceeding $15 million.

In 2026, the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) saw several major changes. After nearly a decade of being held in the autumn at the King's Resort in Rozvadov, this year's event moved to the Hilton Prague in the spring. In addition to the new venue and schedule, the buy-in for the No-Limit Hold'em Main Event was reduced for the first time, from €10,000 to €5,000.

These decisions appear to have yielded substantial returns.

The 2026 tournament set numerous records, including the largest total prize pool ($15,311,740), the most entries (2,617), and the highest first-place prize ($2,300,000). Ultimately, Marius Kudzmanas emerged victorious in this record-breaking event, winning his third career gold bracelet and millions of dollars in prize money.

This year's grand event in Prague boasts a total prize pool that has increased by 84.51 TP3T compared to the previous record high of the 2023 Rozvadov event (1 TP4 T8,300,148). In 2023, German player Max Neugebauer won the event amidst a then-record field of 817 players, taking home nearly $1.6 million in prize money. Below is a comparison of the 17 previous WSOP European Main Events with accompanying figures.

A look back at the history of the WSOP European Main Event

The tournament debuted in 2007 and was held in London for four consecutive years. Annette Obrestad (who finished 34th this year) won the inaugural title and a prize of $2,000,000. The Norwegian online poker star was only 18 years old at the time, setting a record that remains the youngest gold bracelet winner in history.

In the early 2010s, the series briefly changed venues several times before being discontinued in 2014 and 2016, alternating with the discontinued WSOP Asia Pacific Series. In 2017, WSOPE moved to Rozvadov, beginning its longest period of being held in a single location. From then until 2025, this small town near the Czech and German border will host this international poker tournament every autumn (except for 2020 when live events were almost entirely suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

Of the top ten WSOPE Main Events in terms of total prize pool, six have been held in Rozvadov. Besides Prague, London also has two events in the top ten, while Cannes' Majestic Barrière is among them due to its 593 entries in 2011.

Over the years, numerous poker legends have won this event, including Phil Hellmuth, who holds the record for most gold bracelets (2012), and fellow Poker Hall of Famer John Juanda (who won the second WSOPE Main Event in 2008). Two-time Card Player of the Year Adrian Mateos also won the event in 2013 when the Spanish high-stakes star was only 19 years old.

  1. Another notable champion is former Card Player publisher Barry Shulman, who defeated Daniel Negreanu in a heads-up match in 2009 to win the second of his two gold bracelets.
