Women's Heads-Up Showdown Kicks Off PokerNews PowerStack's New Season: RGPS Dallas Shannon Lee won the RGPS Dallas $300 PokerNews PowerStack Mystery Bounty, earning a career-best $17,842 in prize money and a $3,100 bounty. She made history by defeating Lynn Samples in the women's heads-up match.

After six Day 1 starter groups and an exciting Day 2 filled with all-in action, the $300 PokerNews PowerStack Mystery Bounty Tournament has officially come to a successful close. Shannon Lee won her career-best prize of $17,842, plus a $3,100 bounty, her first RGPS ring, and the championship trophy.

This event marks the official opening of the RunGood Poker Series at Palace Poker in Great Prairie, Texas, a venue that first hosted the series during the Passport season in the spring. The series kicks off with the RGPS Golden Expedition fall season, with only 79 players returning for the final day from a massive field of 648 entries.

Lee defeated Lynn Samples in a brief heads-up match to win the largest share of the total prize pool of $162,000, of which $64,800 is reserved for the mystery bounty.

"Excitement, it's amazing," Lee used those two words to describe how she felt after achieving a career high. "I really enjoyed the challenge itself more than the trophy, but it feels really good to have a physical trophy to prove what I've achieved," she said, referring to the ring and trophy.

Returning to the field after 15 years

Lee talked about how her poker journey began long before the poker craze, much earlier than most players.

"My stepfather got me into playing poker in the 90s. I started reading books about it, and then I bought the WSOP app for Xbox 360. I played until I was able to win tournaments and earn virtual prizes in the game. Then I started playing live poker, and in the early 2000s I played in a lot of different family games."

She went on to explain how she took a break from poker after giving birth to her daughter, but quickly regained her form upon her return.

"I played for a long time, but stopped after having my child. I think I was on hiatus for about 15 years, and now she's a senior in high school. So I started playing again about a year ago, and I've been doing very well."

Strategies for dealing with the mystery bounty format

Lee explained how she stays focused on the ultimate goal in mystery bounty events, rather than getting overly obsessed with the bounty itself.

"This hasn't changed my strategy, because my goal isn't the bounty, but the final prize. If you chase the bounty, you'll lose your chips. So I'm not worried about eliminating others for the bounty. I'm more focused on how to get to the end of the tournament."

She added that she viewed the bounty as an extra bonus and took a laissez-faire attitude.

"Whatever bounty you get is what you get. I ended up with... let me think, $3,100. I only got 3 bounties, but one of them was $2,500."

The female contestants shone brightly on the day of the finals.

The Dallas poker scene's female players displayed exceptional competitiveness on final day, with Lee, Samples, and Shannon Eason claiming the largest shares of the prize pool. Eason was eliminated in 10th place at the final table bubble, but earlier in the day she won the largest prize of $10,000, and to her surprise, she also won the second-largest prize of $7,500, a bounty that alone equaled the winner's prize.

Lee attributes the friendly and inclusive environment of Texas Hold'em rooms to the flourishing of women in this male-dominated game.

"I think we have a lot of female players in Texas, and we're very competitive. I think a lot of men would tell you that women are very competitive. I think another point is that everyone can play with peace of mind. Nobody tries to bully anyone, especially when it comes to women versus men."
