Many events at the 2026 Potomac Summer Poker Open went on until the early hours of the morning, but one group of final table players left the poker room around 9 p.m.

This is because the MGM National Harbor's Seniors Tournament reached a nine-party prize-sharing agreement at the final table, with each final table player signing the ICM agreement.

Nine-way prize split in Maryland

This $330 buy-in event, open to players aged 60 and over, attracted 153 entries, creating a total prize pool of $50,490. The original winner was awarded $13,750, but a deal resulted in Phillip Murphy, the final table chip leader, taking home $6,088.

Other contenders for the prize pool included Michael Mathers (2nd place, $5,832), Lawrence Zerolnick (3rd place, $5,591), and Frederick Narding (4th place, $5,133), all of whom received approximately $5,000. Pepper Rodgers, with the shortest stack, received $2,881, more than double the originally awarded $1,357 for ninth place.

Not everyone in the poker room was surprised that the tournament ended with a nine-way split. When the players in the $600 opening event heard the news of the split, Justin Arnwine said that he and several other players had predicted this outcome.

"It's only 9 p.m., time to go to sleep!" Arnwine said with a smile.

Arnwine himself stayed up late, finishing fourth in the $600 opening event for $36,157. The event was won by veteran grinder Ivan Tomic, who defeated Atharv Kumar heads-up for the trophy and $156,190.

This isn't the first time this year (or rather, this summer) has seen such a large prize split. In July, a £100,000 guaranteed monster chip tournament at the Grosvenor Goliath festival saw 11 parties split the prize.

Looking back over the years, there have been even larger-scale prize splits, such as the 15-way split in a women's event at Wynn Las Vegas in 2024.
